History

The Global Health Resource Center (GHRC), founded in 2004 with funds from the NIH's Fogarty International Center, is now supported by the UMB Office of the President and the UMB Foundation. The GHRC is now part of the UMB's Global Health Initiative.

Mission

The GHRC mission is to foster and promote health education, research, and service through inter-professional networking and collaboration both locally and abroad.

Vision

The GHRC is committed to serve the global community through education, research, and service by strengthening partnerships and building capacity to promote health, education and social justice.

Goals

  1. Enhance awareness of global health within the UMB community and build the global profile of UMB through education, research and service.

  2. Foster global health career development for UMB students, trainees and faculty.

  3. Serve the UMB campus community as a single point of reference for international health resources, educational and research opportunities, and programmatic experiences.

  4. Identify opportunities for global health experiences and sources of funding for students, trainees and faculty from UMB and international scholars.

  5. Provide a network to link students, researchers, and program implementers to each other for overseas collaborations.

  6. Ensure safe, ethical and productive international experiences that comply with university policies.

  7. Facilitate and stimulate the award of external funding to support global health education, research and service programs.

UMB Around the World

UMB has myriad teaching and research programs in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Latin America as well as the Eastern shore and urban poor centers of Maryland, dispersed among the six schools, addressing vulnerable populations and global health issues such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, cholera, malaria, cervical cancer, tobacco control, injury prevention, disaster management, social policy, law, ethics, bio-terrorism, immigrant and mental health.

The GHRC is located at the UMB School of Medicine, Center for Vaccine Development (Room 355).
