The University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Program in Trauma, established in 1994, is the only multi-disciplinary physician group practice in the U.S. dedicated to improving the care of patients with traumatic injury. Led by Thomas M. Scalea, MD, FACS, Francis X. Kelly Professor of Trauma Surgery, and Physician-in-Chief of the Shock Trauma Center, the program provides a comprehensive learning environment for medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare providers -- the future physicians and trauma specialists who will apply their skills as leaders of trauma centers throughout the U.S. and around the world.

The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR), the research arm of the School’s Program in Trauma and the Department of Anesthesiology, is the first of its kind in the nation dedicated exclusively to the study of trauma, its complications and prevention. This world-class, multi-disciplinary educational center focuses on the study of brain injuries, critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety, and injury prevention. Led by Alan I. Faden, MD, the David S. Brown Professor of Trauma, the STAR Center encompasses the Charles “McC.” Mathias, Jr. National Study Center for Trauma and EMS, the Shock Trauma clinical research program, and the Department of Anesthesiology research program.

The incidence of trauma in the United States – due to motor vehicle crashes, work-related accidents, personal violence, natural disasters, or sports and recreation – is an epidemic. Advances in trauma care and trauma systems developed by the University of Maryland – such as the use of decompressive craniotomy, or opening the skull, to reduce intracranial pressure -- can significantly improve patient survival and function, bolster public health, and decrease healthcare costs. However, trauma research remains inadequately funded. Through your support, the world’s leading experts in trauma research, care, and education can continue to be ready when your neighbor’s teenage daughter suffers a head injury in a car accident. They will continue to make discoveries to speed the healing process, so your neighbor can see his daughter walk across the stage to receive her high school diploma.
