Visiting Students: Guidelines for Elective Application
Visiting students interested in pursuing electives at the University of Maryland School of Medicine must apply through the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). All students must be in good academic standing at an LCME accredited allopathic medical school and must be fourth-year medical students before starting their electives. Students who initially contact departmental coordinators should be referred to the OSA at 410-706-7476.
The OSA coordinator will ensure that applicants are in good academic standing, that they have both health and liability/malpractice insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000 minimum), have met immunization requirements, and that they have been trained in OSHA Universal Precautions.
To participate in an elective, a visiting student may be required to submit one or more required supporting documents

A separate application form must be completed for each elective requested. The form and supporting documents, if required, must be received in the OSA at least 60 days prior to the start of the requested elective (see application deadlines).
Any visiting student requesting participation in an additional elective, while currently rotating at the University, must also complete another application form. All documentation must be received in the OSA at least 14 days prior to the start of the requested elective.
Each elective experience must be for a duration of four weeks.
Written confirmation of approval for each elective will be generated through the Office of Student Affairs. Confirmation will only be given upon the OSA coordinator receiving a "signed application" from the individual approving the departmental elective.
- After having received written confirmation of approval for each elective, cancellation must be made through the Office of Student Affairs at least 30 days prior to the start of the approved elective.
- A completed evaluation form should be transmitted to the student's home school's designated authority by the department's assigned authority. A copy of the evaluation should be forwarded to the OSA.
Visiting Students from Foreign Medical Schools:
It is the policy of the University of Maryland School of Medicine to accept only fourth-year students for clinical experiences who are enrolled in accredited allopathic medical schools that are approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
