Trauma Research: The Future of Trauma Care

Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death in Americans under the age of 45. It is a worldwide epidemic, with estimates that by the year 2020 road traffic injury alone will be the second leading cause of death worldwide. In the United States, there are more than 1.7 million new traumatic brain injuries (TBI) per year alone, and this number fails to include many of those suffering sports related concussions. TBI has also become the signature injury of military personnel in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
