Founded in 1706 on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore is Maryland's largest city. A major deep-water port, Baltimore boasts a 45-mile waterfront and occupies 80 square miles at the head of the Patapsco River. Baltimore is also a hub for biomedical research and discovery and has become a hot-spot for bioscience industries from around the world.
The 60-acre University of Maryland, Baltimore campus provides advanced research facilities and laboratories, including the University of Maryland Biotechnology Park (UMB Biopark) and the Health Science Facility II. Medical students have the opportunity to get hands-on experience at both the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
We are located in an historic section of Baltimore just two blocks from the Hippodrome Theater, featuring the national touring companies of popular Broadway shows, and five blocks from the bustling Inner Harbor, a highly innovative district for both entertainment and commerce. The harbor itself is actually the end of the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River and includes the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the surrounding area of the city, and is within walking distance of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the home of the Baltimore Orioles, and M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens and has a water taxi that connects the Inner Harbor to Fells Point, Canton, and Fort McHenry . Nearby, the Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore offer opportunities for summer activities. The city is within an hour's drive of the Appalachian Mountains, where summer hiking and winter skiing are enjoyed. Washington, D.C., only 40 miles away, offers additional academic, cultural and recreational activities, and can be easy reached by the MARC train just blocks away from campus.
Baltimore is situated in one of the finest areas in the country as far as the fostering of mergers between industry, science and medicine, and is quickly leading the way in biological discovery and innovation.
